A lot of our clients range from developers, insurance agencies, real estate companies and many more. So with that being said, let’s get into the nitty gritty of measuring real estate with laser tape measures, and why it’s so important to do so!

Uses for Laser Tape Measurements

Laser Tape Measures

There are so many different types of use cases for laser tape measures, but one thing for sure is that the main use case for using this technology is for measuring houses, primarily dimensions inside or outside of a house for a renovation, insurance claim, etc.

That’s why Matterport is so important for these kinds of companies. They create a 3D model with their Lidar technology, and are accurate to the 99%. You may think this is good, and while this is, you need the accuracy to be as close to 100% as possible, so this is where people will use all kinds of laser tape measurement tools to get that extra one percent. Home Depot, Lowes, and many other home appliance and improvement stores have laser tape measures where you can get a large improvement in accuracy from outside the Matterport system. From what Momentum 360 has seen over the years, Bosch is the leading manufacturer and company for these kinds of lasers, based on the accuracy, price, scope of work, etc, it’s just the best. Granted there are other types of companies out there, but from what we’ve personally used here at Momentum 360, as well as our contractor base…we’ve seen Bosch as the best company to do the job.

Since 2017, Momentum 360 has done thousands of laser tape measurement service jobs across the country, and all of them were for a renovation/insurance claim for a property. Think about it for a second. If you use Matterport to get as accurate as possible for your renovation, and only get up to 99% accuracy…then you’re missing out on that very crucial 1% that can either make or break your renovation. If your dimension is off by 1%, it will cause a dramatic difference in pricing, timeline, scope, etc for your home renovation project. It will also cause a lot of headache for your builder as they now have wrong information that they’re going off of. At the end of the day, it’s so much more worth it to hire a company like Momentum 360 to do a laser tape measure service for you to ensure you have accurate measurements!

Cost for Laser Tape Measures

Laser Tape Measures

Laser Tape Measures

Based on the work we’ve done in this field, the cost for laser tape measure services really depends on what we’re shooting. Like Matterport, we normally price everything by the square footage to get a sense of what we’re shooting and how long it’ll take to actually complete something. For example, a 1500 square foot house and a 200,000 square foot commercial space are completely different spaces, and will require a different amount of pricing, scope of work, expectations, etc. This might be common sense, but common sense isn’t common!

For our services, we charge $250 + 10% of the total square footage for our laser tape measure services. This takes into account the base fee that we split with the contractor, as well as the total square footage that will actually be captured, which will also be split with the contractor.

It’s so much better for you to hire a professional to make sure that this will be done correctly, instead of trying to do it yourself. However…if you absolutely need to do it by yourself with a budget, then this can be accomplished, but you need to know what you’re doing first before anything.

As previously mentioned, the Bosch laser tape measures are the best in the world, we’ll be discussing a few of their models now to let you pick and choose which one will be the best for you. This Bosch laser, which you can check out here, has a max capacity of 165 feet, plus or minus 1/16th, with double a alkaline and obvious capacity to measure indoor and outdoor. This one we highly recommend for you to buy if you’re on a “do it yourself” type of budget. This only will cost you roughly $130-140 with taxes and shipping included.

Sure it beats our pricing, but you don’t have the experience to actually do it yourself, so instead of paying more money, you’re paying with your time to get the problem resolved to learn how to do it yourself. This isn’t a bad thing, it just depends which route you’d like to take. In this life, you either have time, or money, both are valuable currencies, which would you like to spend on this project?

Time to Shoot Laser Tape Measures

Laser Tape Measures

Laser Tape Measures

Just like real estate photography, the same principles can be applied to shooting with a laser tape measure. The best time to shoot with a laser tape measure from an outside perspective is when it’s completely clear, and there’s no rain/snow/sleet, etc. Again, pretty common sense, but you need to make sure that there are as minimal cloud coverage as possible to ensure your laser tape measures from the outside won’t be tarnished due to the cloud coverage.

The interior doesn’t really matter about the weather, but we highly recommend you buy a balance bar to make sure your measurements are balanced and not skewed due to poor alignment. This is the best way to go about doing it on your own. Now, if you’re to hire Momentum 360 to do this job, we take a completely different approach, where depending on the square footage, we are able to finish everything in a matter of minutes, not hours or days….minutes.

Laser tape measures are an easy service to carry out, but people love to make them complicated for whatever reason! Life is simple, and if you understand that on a deep level it actually will become simple for you! This is why it’s so much better to hire us for your laser tape measure service needs.

Now, in terms of shooting a large 200,000 square foot facility, it’s imperative to make sure that if we can get away and shoot with Matterport, then we will! It’s just so much manpower to manually take these measurements each and every time, rather than letting the Matterport camera do all the work for you. Sure, it might take more time to actually complete the project, but that’s better than it taking longer and you do it right the first time, rather than messing up multiple times and having to re-do the entire process, which is obviously very annoying!
