In this week’s blog post, we’re going to be talking about drone photography and how much you should be charging for it. Drone photo and videography is one of the biggest trends right now and is a very popular choice for real estate, cinematography, wedding photography, insurance, or anything else you can think of. 


As with any kind of business, how much you charge for your products and services can vary from company to company and largely has to do with the time and size of a project. So there isn’t any kind of hard and fast rule about exactly how much you should charge. In today’s blog, we’ll be talking about the factors that go into building the price that is right for your company.

Using drone photography or drone videos can take your content to the next level. Drones allow you to capture a full 360 video of your property from an aerial view. While most industries are only just getting into the use of drones and drone photography, real estate has adopted the use of drones since the product’s infancy. 


In residential real estate especially, drones are a very popular tool used by realtors because it not only shows that specific house, it also shows the property surrounding the home. From there, potential buyers get a better sense of the size of the house when compared to the land size, what the neighborhood looks like, and the property’s proximity to the woods or streets. 


By getting the whole picture, clients feel more confident in their initial feelings about the property and are more likely to want to see it in person. 



As we mentioned earlier, there are so many factors that go into pricing for this kind of service. No matter how standardized you try to make your pricing, there are always going to be a unique set of challenges at every location. 


When setting your prices, you must consider the following aspects:

  • Type of Listing and Location

  • Type of Drone / Drone Costs

  • Business Expenses

  • Number of Photos & Videos

  • Expertise


Type of Listing and Location

As mentioned earlier, each project has a unique set of needs and problems that may arise when you are taking your photos. Custom pricing for each listing has to factor in the size of the property, whether its a luxury property or otherwise, the unique angles of the home, and the neighborhood it is located in. For example, some properties may be in a busy neighborhood which must be accounted for, and others may be nestled in an area where trees and other greenery may block the shots in some parts. Overall, preparation and scouting out the location will help you determine these factors and how they will affect your ability to provide the drone shots.


The location is also important because if your business is in an area with a competitive drone photography market, your prices will have to reflect those of your competition. If there are many options in the area, you can’t have your prices be much more expensive because potential clients may decide to go with a cheaper company. On the other hand, you don’t want to make your prices so low that you can’t be competitive with other companies. Type of Drone / Drone Costs

Now that drones have been on the market for a few years and their popularity continues to grow, there are many different models and types for photographers to choose from. Some realtors may provide their own drone which will lessen the cost of the photos, but most of the time the photographer is expected to provide a drone. In this case, the cost of the drone and the cost of the photographer’s training and licensing must be factored into the cost of the photographs. Luxury-brand drones may increase the quality of the photos produced, but will also increase the price of the photography. 


Business Expenses

There are a number of outside expenses that come from owning and operating a drone photography business. These include but aren’t limited to software subscriptions, mileage, marketing, SEO, and employee expenses. Another big cost comes from drone insurance. Drone insurance isn’t necessary, but many realtors would prefer that their photographers have their equipment insured so that they won’t be liable if any damage comes to the drone during the shoot. The cost of drone insurance varies from provider to provider, but on average costs $750 a year. That entire cost should not be the responsibility of the customer, but it should be considered when setting the price of a shoot.

Number of Photos

One way to estimate the price of drone photography is to charge per image produced. This way, you can create a set cost and your clients will choose an option that fits their needs and their budget. Another way to charge is per-hour or per-minute. You can estimate the time it will take to complete a job to give the client a rough idea of what the cost will be. The downside to this option is that if you run into unexpected problems and the shoot takes longer than expected, your clients may not be willing or able to pay for the entire time spent on the project.



The type of drone you use definitely plays a role in how your images will turn out, but it’s not guaranteed that a more expensive drone will automatically produce perfect images. You will need to use photographers with the skill and experience level necessary to create professional and acceptable images. 


Furthermore, your company’s reputation is an important marketing tool. People want to work with businesses they can trust to be fairly-priced and will produce outstanding results for them. Testimonials, portfolios, and business reviews can be an invaluable tool in this respect. 


There isn’t really a hard and fast rule or formula to come up with prices for your drone photography business. There are so many factors that go into the cost, most of which vary from property to property. The best you can do is to examine all aspects of your business and your clients and come up with a price that is competitive while still meeting your business’s needs.
