AI generated content is everywhere. From blog posts and marketing copy to school assignments and website content, tools like ChatGPT have made it easier than ever to create written content in seconds.
But how can you tell whether something was written by AI or by a real person?
Whether you are a teacher checking student work, a student reviewing an assignment, a digital marketer auditing website content, or a business owner reviewing content for your website, AI detection tools can give you a useful starting point.
In this guide, we will look at three free AI content detection tools and compare how they identify AI generated and human written content.
Why Is AI Content Detection Important?
Using AI to help create content is not automatically a problem. The bigger concern is publishing content that provides little value, feels repetitive, or exists primarily to manipulate search rankings.
For businesses, this is especially important. Website content should be useful, accurate, original, and written for people first.
AI detection tools can help you review content and identify sections that may deserve a closer look. However, their results should not be treated as absolute proof that a person or AI wrote something.
In fact, our own test showed why you should be careful with these tools.
The Three AI Content Detectors We Tested
For this test, we used three popular tools:
- Scribbr AI Detector
- ZeroGPT
- Copyleaks AI Detector
We first tested text generated by ChatGPT and then compared those results with an older blog excerpt that had been written by a human.
1. Scribbr AI Detector
Scribbr offers an AI detection tool that can analyze written content and estimate whether it was generated by AI.
For our first test, we copied text generated by ChatGPT and pasted it into the detector.
The result was very clear. Scribbr identified the text as AI generated with a 100% AI probability in our test.
We then tested our older human written content.
This time, Scribbr identified the content as mostly human written, although it still estimated that there was a possibility that some of the text could have been generated by AI.
That result is important because the content had actually been written by a person years earlier.
2. ZeroGPT
The second tool we tested was ZeroGPT.
ZeroGPT also allows users to paste text into an online detector and receive an estimate of whether the content was generated by AI.
When we tested the ChatGPT generated text, ZeroGPT identified it as AI generated.
We then tested the older human written blog content.
ZeroGPT classified the content as human written, but it still detected a 12.62% probability of AI generated text.
This shows that even content written entirely by a person can sometimes trigger an AI detector.
3. Copyleaks
The third tool we tested was Copyleaks.
Copyleaks provided another straightforward way to check the content.
When we tested the ChatGPT generated text, the tool identified it as AI written.
We then tested the older human written content.
In this case, Copyleaks identified the content as human written.
The results were interesting because Copyleaks was more straightforward in our test, while the other two tools still assigned a small probability that the human written content could have been AI generated.
What Did Our Test Show?
Our test produced an interesting result.
The AI generated text was consistently identified as AI generated by all three tools.
However, the human written content did not receive a perfect human score from every detector.
Here is a simplified look at our results:
| Tool | AI Generated Content | Human Written Content |
|---|---|---|
| Scribbr | Identified as AI | Mostly human, with some AI probability |
| ZeroGPT | Identified as AI | Human, with a 12.62% AI probability |
| Copyleaks | Identified as AI | Identified as human |
This tells us something important: AI detectors are useful, but they are not infallible.
A detector can flag writing as potentially AI generated even when a human actually wrote it.
Why Can Human Writing Be Flagged as AI?
This can happen for several reasons.
Some writing naturally follows predictable patterns. Professional writing, educational content, technical explanations, and frequently used phrases can sometimes look similar to patterns associated with AI generated text.
For example, if multiple articles use similar sentence structures or common expressions, an AI detector may consider some of those patterns suspicious.
That is why you should not automatically assume that a piece of content is AI generated simply because one detector says it is.
Using multiple tools and reviewing the actual content yourself provides a much better approach.
Should You Use AI Detectors for Your Website Content?
Yes, but use them as a reviewing tool rather than a final authority.
If you manage a business website, you should focus on questions such as:
- Does the content answer the reader’s question?
- Is the information accurate?
- Does it provide something useful?
- Is the content original?
- Does it demonstrate real experience or expertise?
- Does it sound natural?
- Is it actually written for the intended audience?
These questions are often more important than simply trying to achieve a particular AI detector score.
For businesses creating marketing content, the goal should not be to make every sentence “undetectable.” The goal should be to create genuinely useful content that helps customers.
AI Content and Digital Marketing
AI can be a valuable tool for brainstorming, research assistance, outlines, editing, and content production.
However, businesses should still add human expertise and real experience to their content.
For example, a virtual tour company can use AI to help organize ideas for an article about virtual tours, but the strongest content will also include real project experience, practical examples, industry knowledge, and information that customers can actually use.
That human experience is what turns generic content into useful business content.

Final Thoughts
AI detection tools can be useful when you want to get an idea of whether content may have been generated by AI.
In our test, Scribbr, ZeroGPT, and Copyleaks were all able to identify the ChatGPT generated content we tested. However, our human written content also received some AI probability from certain tools.
That is why AI detector results should always be interpreted carefully.
If you are a teacher, marketer, business owner, or content creator, use these tools as one part of your review process rather than treating them as definitive proof.
Most importantly, focus on creating content that is accurate, useful, original, and genuinely helpful to the people reading it.
